Prof Bassey is a native of Eyobisung in Udung Uko Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State He had his Primary School education in the then Group School Eyosung, Udung Uko from where he proceeded to the famous Methodist Boys’ High School Oron where he studied at both the Secondary School and Higher School levels. He holds BSc and MSc in Chemical and Petrochemical Engineering from the now Lvov Polytechnic National University, Ukraine and PhD in Chemical Engineering from University of Bradford, England. Prof Bassey is the former Head of the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, University of Uyo. He was also the Head of Department of Chemical/Petrochemical Engineering in Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Ikot Akpaden and is now the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, AKSU. Prof Bassey has combined academic work with extensive industrial work experience spanning a period of over 41 years. Prior to his University experience, Prof Bassey worked and headed many key Divisions in the Steel Industry and rose to the level of Deputy General Manager in Delta Steel Company from where he disengaged when the Company was privatized.
Prof Bassey has contributed immensely to the Engineering profession and has over 88 publications to his credit. He is a past Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Warri Branch and the immediate past Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers Akwa Ibom/ Cross River States Chapter. He is a winner of various International and Local Awards such as, the Carl Hanson Travel Award of the British Institution of Chemical Engineers for his research while in Bradford, the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers “Pinnacle Holdings” Award for his work in developing iron ore raw materials for use in the Steel Industry and in addition, the RMRDC /Federal Ministry of Science & Technology National Prize for Process Equipment and Plants Design. He served as the Nigeria Representative in the International Iron and Steel Institute Committee on Technology with headquarters in Brussels. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Nigeria, a Fellow of both the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers and the Nigerian Society of Engineers, a Senior Member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and a Chartered Member of the Nigerian Institute of Management. During his student days in Lvov and Bradford he was the President of the Nigerian Students’ Unions. He is happily married to Mrs Mfon Etim Bassey and the marriage is blessed with gifted children.
